It’s not easy deciding in your last couple of years of high school what you want to do for the rest of your life. Sometimes, often, you have no idea and the direction is far from clear. You might know what you’re good at and what you like doing, but you’re not too sure where to start.

Youth unemployment rates have remained stagnant. Underemployment is increasing and finding work is increasingly difficult for all young people.
Half of Australia’s 25-year-olds are unable to secure full-time employment, despite 60% holding post-school qualifications. 1 in 3 young people are unemployed or underemployed, with the youth unemployment rate being more than double the national average.
Having so many young people out of the workforce costs our economy 790 million lost hours of work each year, equating to up to $15.9 billion in lost GDP to the Australian economy annually. Out of 1,355,513 jobs advertised online in the past year, only 6,311 jobs were advertised with ‘no experience required.’ That is, 0.5% of available positions are entry-level.

Young people are used to learning and want to learn. They’ve just come out of school or education, so they’re used to that mindset. They’re ready to absorb training and instruction.
Often wages of young people is less than a more experienced worker. There is also opportunity for trainee and apprenticeships which a fantastic option for both parties.
Millennials have grown up with technology. They’re quick to learn new software and programs, as it can often come quite naturally.
Young people are likely to except and understand sudden change. This can be of great benefit in the shifting landscape of the modern-day workplaces where process, technology and priorities are constantly changing. With economic, social and political boundaries in a state of flux, adaptability gives young people an advantage in a work environment that is more agile, changeable and fast paced than ever before.
